The National Register of Historic Places is the United States' official list of historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and run by the National Park Service, the National Register is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect America's historic and archeological resources.
Historic sites on the National Register are divided into four types — buildings, structures, sites, and objects. Examples of each include houses and commercial buildings; bridges and walls; cemeteries and archaeological sites; and cannons and historical markers. Although many places are listed on the National Register by themselves or in small groups, places can also be part of historic districts, which comprise multiple historic sites that are related to each other and that are in close physical proximity to each other. Locations qualify to be added to the National Register if they pass one or more of four criteria:
- Criterion A — event: the property is associated with historic events in our past
- Criterion B — person: the property is associated with a historically significant person
- Criterion C — construction: the property is a historically significant example of a style of architecture or method of construction
- Criterion D — information: the property is capable of yielding historically important information, usually through archaeological investigation
In general, places can only qualify to be listed on the National Register if they are at least fifty years old. While it is possible for places to be listed if they have been modified in comparatively recent times, such modifications must not be extensive; properties must be substantially unchanged so that they be deemed to retain their historic nature.
Over eighty-five thousand locations in the United States are listed on the National Register, including over seventeen hundred in Indiana. Forty-one of those locations are found in Monroe County, which gives it the tenth highest total among the state's counties. This distribution is substantially greater than that of surrounding areas, which have the following number of places listed on the National Register:
In Monroe County, the historic sites are heavily concentrated in Bloomington; only eleven are found in the county's other municipalities or in unincorporated areas. Ellettsville and Stinesville have historic districts in their downtowns, and nine places are found in six townships.
