Afghanistan isn't in the Persian Gulf. --Jkonrath 17:40, 20 October 2006 (EDT)

Geography

Very true, Afghanistan is fairly removed from the Persian Gulf. However, I've heard it lumped in with the war in Iraq and listed as a nation in that general region. Is there a better grouping for the war Afghanistan, other than as part of the Second Gulf War? Chris Eller 19:05, 20 October 2006 (EDT)

If you want to lump both together, "War on terror" might work. The current conflict in Afghanistan is part of Operation Enduring Freedom, but that also includes operations in Africa and the Phillipines. The terms First and Second Gulf War are misleading, because it was used to describe multiple wars in the area. (We consider the 1990-1991 one to be the first, but the UN and the British call the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war the First Gulf War.) You could call them Operation Desert Storm and Operation Enduring Freedom, although maybe just Gulf War and 2003 Iraq War or something. (And none of these were technically wars. The US hasn't declared war since 1941.) --Jkonrath 17:43, 23 October 2006 (EDT)
