Bloomingpedia talk:Front page development

From Bloomingpedia

What do you think?

So what does everyone thing about this layout? If we go with it, we'll have to start setting up portals for the subjects listed in the top bar. I haven't created any of those portal pages yet so that we can choose different ones to put there if we want. -- Mark 22:18, 22 June 2006 (EDT)

Sweetness. Really. I like it a lot. It might also be a good idea to have something for news items. Nothing too grandiose, but since we have a Current Events page, it would be cool to feature it someway. -Chrobb 22:31, 22 June 2006 (EDT)
Mark, this page is much too kewl to not share. Let's roll this out as soon as you see fit. Chris 09:10, 23 June 2006 (EDT)
I like what's here, but I'd also add a current events box, and maybe take the existing "starting points" links and make them a box, too. Maybe eventually when we get the date stuff really stocked up, there could be an "on this day" box. --Jkonrath 11:47, 23 June 2006 (EDT)

On This Day?

I like Jon's suggestion of doing an "On This Day" section, so I thought I'd break that out into a new discussion. As he points out, it's obviously going to take some time before we can populate the dates enough. It might also be easier to do an "on this week" instead just so we don't have to update it quite as often (and we'll have more available to us initially), -Chrobb 11:57, 23 June 2006 (EDT)

How does Wikipedia do their on this day? Is it automagically propagated out of articles, or is there like a big file with a bunch of dates in it? Because if it's the latter, that would be a huge pain in the ass to do. --Jkonrath 13:12, 23 June 2006 (EDT)
Wikipedia apparently does it all by hand. See their page on anniversaries. Looks like they refine it over time. I wonder if there's a bot that actually grabs the particular day. I'm sure we can come up with something programattic. Mark looooves to write plugins. :-D -Chrobb 13:19, 23 June 2006 (EDT)
OK, I've been going crazy trying to get dates linked and fixed, and adding some rudimentary day pages. This is a pain, but it will eventually pay off. I think the big thing now is to try and dig for any actual dates when things happen so we can get them wired in. --Jkonrath 15:21, 23 June 2006 (EDT)

Safari?

I don't know if it's just me, but in Safari 2.0.3, the page doesn't render correctly. The featured article and mystery picture are just shown as links, and not inserted... Jkonrath 20:14, 25 June 2006 (EDT)

No, I think that was just because the two templates for the featured article and mystery picture needed to be updated. Basically, every week or sooner we'll need to create a new page for each mystery picture and featured article so that the front page doesn't end up with blank links to templates. -- Mark 22:19, 25 June 2006 (EDT)
