Woolworth

From Bloomingpedia

Woolworth was a national chain department store that occupied a corner of The Square from 1933 to 1972. It had a large candy counter and lunch counter.

The national chain was something of the Wal-Mart of its day, charging extremely low prices that local businesses were unable to compete with. In addition, the store had a policy against serving African-Americans until the 1960's.

The swivel chairs in The Bakehouse are the same ones that Woolworth had in the 1930's (They have new wooden seats, but are still supported by the original black iron pedestals.)
