Overview

The Indiana Daily student is a nationally recognized, independent, student-run newspaper located on the Indiana University Bloomington campus at Ernie Pyle Hall. The IDS employs approximately 200 students and 11 professional staff members. It is a free publication with a circulation of 15,000. The IDS is entirely independent of the University and the School of Journalism, receiving all of its funding from advertising.

The scope of the newspaper is focused on campus-wide events, but also covers city, regional and world wide events. It is distributed for free from many locations around campus as well as around Bloomington.

The IDS also publishes WEEKEND magazine, an entertainment magazine available Thursdays.

In the fall of 2006, its quarterly magazine, INside, made its debut.

History

The paper was first formed on February 22, 1867, as the Indiana Student, and was published twice a month. The paper ceased publishing in 1874 due to financial difficulty, but restarted in 1882 by William Lowe Bryan. It became the Daily Student in 1899, and the Indiana Daily Student in 1914. On July 1, 1969, the paper became financially and editorially independent of the University.

The IDS was a paid-circulation until the fall of 1995, when the cover price of 25 cents was dropped and it was distributed for free.
