The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints established a permanent presence in Bloomington in the 1960s. Its first appearance in the area was in the 1830s, Mormonism’s first decade. Persecutions and a need to gather together prompted most Mormons to migrate westward.

The Church organizes its members into geographically-defined congregations called wards. Each ward has about two hundred members and is entirely run by volunteers from its membership. Since 2002, Bloomington has had four such wards: the University Ward on the east side, the Highland Ward on the northwest side, the Clear Creek Ward on the southwest side, and the Bloomington Branch YSA for young single adults from Bloomington and surrounding communities.

Bloomington has two Mormon chapels. The Second Street Chapel is across from Binford Elementary School. West Third Street has the Bloomington Stake Center, so called because it hosts conferences of the Bloomington Stake, which directs wards in Bloomington, Bedford, Greencastle, Linton, Martinsville, and Terre Haute.
