Boys and Girls Club

From Bloomingpedia

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Bloomington is a non-profit organization seeking to provide recreation and companionship to the children and young adults of the community. Young people need to know that someone cares about them. The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Bloomington is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

The main building is located on Lincoln Street across from Third Street Park at the site of an old armory. The club also runs Crestmont Center.

The organization was founded in 1956. Howard A. Young, owner of Young's Luggage and Leather Goods, was a driving force and founding president of the club. Realtor Pete Dunn, who served as club president during the early 1960s, worked with Young, the Optimist Club, and others to raise funds to purchase the armory as a permanent club site.
